Although there is plethora of student-run clubs in the Convent of the Sacred Heart Upper School community, the Bread for the World club is unique in that it raises hunger awareness both locally and globally.  Juniors Katie Hill and Mari Riera are co-heads of the Sacred Heart branch of the international Christian charity organization.
According to the organization’s official website, bread.org, World Food Prize Laureate David Beckmann has been President of Bread for the World since 1991. The non-profit not only provides aid to those suffering from hunger, but also assists those affected by war and poverty.
The organization set up the Kakuma Refugee Camp in 1992 to house refugees fleeing a civil war in the northern Sudan. Under the care of the United Nations, the camp provided shelter, food, water, health care, education and other essential services, according to bread.org.
Members of the Sacred Heart Bread for the World club aim to provide food and opportunities for those in less fortunate communities in local Connecticut and New York areas. Students participating in the club also write letters to congressmen in hopes of redirecting millions of dollars to help the hungry within the tri-state area.
“We really hope that we can make a difference through donations of canned foods and by hosting a bake sale,” Katie said.
Katie and Mari are planning an event at Arch Street, the Greenwich Teen Center, in which all the proceeds will go directly toward the organization. The club heads are also board members of the center. They hope to convince their fellow peers to continue their support of Bread for the World.
“Katie and I hope that the event is a fun and active way to support our cause and our club,” Mari said.
