Convent of the Sacred Heart’s student-run acapella singing sensation, Note-orious, held auditions October 14 for new members wishing to contribute to the group’s melodic performances this year. Each student chose a song to perform in front of the founders of the group, seniors Jessica Johnson, Emily Casper and Catie Capolongo.
Jessica, Emily and Catie, who are also members of Sacred Heart’s Upper School singing group, Madrigals, created Note-orious along with Class of 2014 alumnae Nicolette Brusco, Jane Mikus, and D’Nea Galbraith in winter 2014. It is the first student-run singing group at Sacred Heart.
“We were inspired by the movie Pitch Perfect,” Emily said. “It showed us that even though we all have different music genres that we like, we can combine all of them. For example, we can take the soundtracks of classic movies and combine them with rap music or songs by Rihanna.”
Members categorize contemporary pieces by genre, and then choose songs with similar themes to mashup. They harmonize the songs to create original melodies to perform at school events. For example, the group chose beauty as the theme for their performance at last year’s Talent for Tots, Sacred Heart’s annual talent show for charity.
Since it is not a club, Note-orious does not have regularly scheduled meeting times. Singers are therefore required to set aside time in their own schedules to practice for upcoming shows.
“Although finding time to rehearse is the hardest part, it all works out in the end due to the members’ commitment. This is one reason why we value being able to choose who gets in since we only want people who are going to be really dedicated,” Catie said.
With new members, seniors Maria Mikhail and Annie Werdiger, and juniors Alessandra Nocco, Julenne Jaramillo and Nebai Hernandez, the group is excited to start preparing a Christmas mashup.
“Now that we have the new generation of Note-orious members, I can’t wait to get started and work together to blend the songs we all like,” Emily said.”That’s what it’s all about and it’s the really fun part.”
