Stars of the sidelines
While athletes shine on the field and court, varsity team sport managers help the team run smoothly and efficiently on the sidelines.
Although Convent of the Sacred Heart managers do not drive the ball up the field or score goals, they control the scoreboard, record statistics during games and matches, help gather equipment, and encourage teammates. They also attend team dinners, ride on the bus with their teammates to games, and receive varsity letters at the end of the season.
Sacred Heart has three varsity sport managers this fall. Juniors Cynthia Thomas and Bella Caponiti manage varsity field hockey, and junior Izzy Sio manages varsity volleyball.
Cynthia was willing to take on the task as the varsity field hockey co-manager because she wanted to get involved in the athletics program.
“I unfortunately was not gifted with athleticism, but I admire team spirit greatly,” Cynthia said.
Director of Athletics Ms. Kelly Stone agrees that being a manager is an excellent way to participate in sports.
“Being on a team is a special experience,” Ms. Stone said. “We want our managers to be a part of the entire team experience and not just what happens on game day.”
The managers are invested in the team and its successes. One of Bella’s most memorable experiences as manager was when sophomore goalie Lizzie Kupersmith made 27 saves in the team’s game against Loomis Chaffee School October 1.
“We had to add more saves to the scorebook because there is only room for 25,” Bella said. “The game was intriguing and so much fun to watch.”

Varsity volleyball manager Izzy was also the junior varsity volleyball manager for the fall 2012 season and the varsity volleyball manager for the fall 2013 season. She enjoys her close friendships with teammates and rejoices in its success.
“When we won the FAA championship last year, I felt like I was sharing in their victory,” Izzy said.
“Managers are still a big part of the team,” she said. “For our team especially, we are like a big family. Singing along to music on the bus rides is always a great time.”
Despite the fact that managers do not provide teams with aces and goals, their responsibilities equally contribute to the team’s prosperity.

I love that the sport managers are getting this recognition! I didn’t know they play such a big role for the team (I don’t play sports). We wouldn’t even know all the statistics of our games if it wasn’t for them.
