Convent of the Sacred Heart juniors Katherine Nail and Kelly McLaughlin created the student-run Positively More club, based on the Junior League of Greenwich’s Positively More project of September 2014. Their goal is to advise young girls to make wise decisions through peer mentorship and discussion.
The Junior League of Greenwich, partnered with the United Way, Greenwich Public Schools, YWCA Domestic Abuse Service, and Speech Improvement Company, Inc., presents the Positively More discussions and activities.
According to jlgreenwich.org, “the project aims to give girls the tools to avoid difficult situations, lessen the consequences of potential conflicts, and identify lessons learned by the challenges.”
The Sacred Heart club provides opportunities for students to volunteer as teen ambassadors (TAs) during Positively More workshops. In the sessions, the TAs serve as mentors to sixth grade girls participating in the series.
“The Positively More teen ambassadors travel through the activities with the girls as well as lend advice when it is needed,” Katherine said.
The project consists of five one-day sessions that teach ten and eleven-year-old girls how to make wise and moral decisions when faced with difficult situations, including peer pressure with drugs and alcohol. Top professionals who specialize in teen counseling, youth services, social media, and education, moderate the workshops, according to jlgreenwich.org.
“The purpose of the Positively More club is to spread awareness about the workshops and teen ambassador opportunities at school so that the Saturday workshops are successful throughout the year,” Katherine said.
According to jlgreenwich.org, the workshops revolve around a series of different themes, including Your Body . . . Your Decision, The Value of Friendships, Your Digital Reputation, and Practice Using Your Moral Compass. These lessons warn the participants about the consequences of making poor decisions, and advise how to fix mistakes.
The series runs November 1, 2014 through April 25, 2015. Sacred Heart students interested in volunteering to be teen ambassadors can contact Katherine or Kelly for more information. Sixth grade girls looking to sign up for a Positively More session can register online. The five meetings each run from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, and are free of charge.
“I find it important to be a club head for this non-profit because it is teaching me a lot about responsibility and the impact I can have on the outlook of young girls,” Kelly said.
