The Golden Globes, January 13, were, well…golden. The stars sparkled in their couture, the acceptance speeches were heart-warming, and the hosts were hilarious. In traditional fashion, the hosts, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler poked fun at almost every celebrity in attendance, taking no prisoners with their pointed jokes and undercutting comments. The night was exciting for all viewers who reveled in the happiness of the winners and caught glimpses of the sulking losers who attempted to maintain their poise during the acceptance speeches.  (i.e. Taylor Swift when Adele won for “Skyfall.”)
Ben Affleck was the frontrunner of the evening, receiving praise for his movie Argo as “Best Drama” and taking home the prize for “Best Director,” arguably two of the most prestigious awards at the Golden Globes. Convent of the Sacred Heart sophomore Kate Burkett was thrilled to see Affleck do so well at the globes.
“Watching on Sunday night was so exciting for me, because I literally love Ben Affleck. Since he didn’t get nominated for any Oscars, I was really happy to see him win at the Golden Globes. He’s such a talented director and actor,” Kate said.
Other big winners of the night were Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence. Hathaway won “Best Supporting Actress” for her piercing role as Fantine in Les Miserables, a part her mother originated in the US traveling tour.  She sparkled on stage in an elegant, silver, two- piece Chanel gown. Lawrence won “Best Female Lead in a Comedy of Musical” for her role in Silver Linings Playbook and also stood out on stage in a fiery red Dior Haute Couture dress. She did not hide her excitement on stage during her acceptance speech, joking with a line from First Wives Club, “I beat Meryl.”
However, the winners were not the only stars of the night. Audiences were shocked when Bill Clinton appeared to introduce the Lincoln montage. Co-host Amy Poehler quipped, “Wow, what an exciting special guest…That was Hilary Clinton’s husband.”  Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig paired up to present “Best Lead Actress in a Comedy or Musical.” The comedic duo had the audience dying of laughter by the time they had finished the skit, rivaling the hilarity of the two female co-hosts.
Two semi-predictable winners were Jessica Chastain and Daniel Day-Lewis, who won “Best Actress” and “Best Actor in a Drama” for their stunning performances in Zero Dark Thirty and Lincoln, respectively. Christoph Waltz also won “Best Supporting Actor” for his role in Django Unchained, where he played a sly and ruthless bounty-hunter. Quentin Tarantino took home “Best Screenplay” for his creation of the gruesome and satirical Django.
The Golden Globes this year did not disappoint, making viewers laugh, cry, and wish they were worth millions like most of the stars in attendance.  Even with two female co-hosts replacing the infamous Ricky Gervais as host, fans were pleased with the hilarious results.
“This was my favorite Golden Globes ever,” senior Camilla Kummen said.  “I loved it.”
