"Humans of Sacred Heart" – Olivia Wise ’19

How long have you and student council been planning Congé?

“The student council green and white team captains and I have been planning Congé since the beginning of the year.  However, we didn’t start really focusing on the specific activities and items that needed to be ordered until the beginning of January.  For the first couple months of school, we would meet about once a cycle to start brainstorming plans, games, ideas and themes.  After Christmas break, we started making lists of jobs and things we each had to get done before a specific time.  In other words, we made a timeline with dates of meetings for what had to be discussed during each meeting so that everything was planned according to schedule. Sometimes it may seem like there isn’t a lot of planning that goes into Congé, but I found that once I had the responsibility of planning, there was a lot of work to get done before the big day.  I was a bit stressed at first, but the other captains were awesome and I couldn’t have done it without them.”

What inspired you and your fellow student council members to come up with the theme Wipeout?

“The student council members and I were initially debating between a couple of themes.  I thought of this theme Wipeout immediately after I was elected last year and brought it to the attention of the captains.  They loved the idea as well and we discussed how we could come up with entertaining activities and games pertaining to the show.  Ultimately, we all wanted something everyone would like.  So, that ended up being Wipeout.”

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced during the planning?

“One of the biggest challenges we faced during the planning was probably the budget.  There is a very small budget we are given, but, with the help of the captains, we were able to brainstorm ideas that were fun for all and within the budget.  Another big challenge we faced was that once we reached January, we started stressing because we realized that the day was now near.  I didn’t want our meetings to go to waste because we had so much to get done, and I didn’t want the captains stressing when they also had school work to get done.”
