Television is getting a run for its money with YouTube on the scene. YouTube is the biggest face of entertainment for the people of the twenty-first century.
YouTube is no longer just a place to listen to music. It is also the modern day encyclopedia. Filled with makeup tutorials, advice, humor, and free online tutors, the video-sharing site has the potential to be the “mother figure” of modern society.
“YouTube caters to a lot of different types of people,” junior Katie Hill said. “It is useful for all things. Like last year, I used YouTube to help me study for my AP and it was way better than just reading over my notes.”
The benefits of the site are endless. Different organizations even use YouTube to promote their products to consumers.
“Every time I go on YouTube there’s always an ad and it’s so annoying,” sophomore Marie Njie-Mitchell said. “But it makes sense because if it wasn’t for YouTube, I’d never see ads because I barely watch TV anymore.”
Fame has also emerged through YouTube. Many celebrities that we see on TV even know the celebrities of YouTube such as Lohanthony, Kingsley, and Jenna Marbles.
These YouTubers inspire other everyday people to promote themselves and to earn a fan base.
“I like to use YouTube to promote my acting and singing and to experiment with different things,” sophomore Eva Carrasquero said. “It is also fun to connect with other youtubers and get to do cool things.”
Though the site seems to be centralized around the young adults of the twenty-first century, even the adults of this century can use YouTube to their benefit.
A news feature links viewers to nationwide news and news just within the United States. CNN, ABC News, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal have YouTube accounts with valuable information for online viewers.
YouTube is a significant part of online social media. With its ability to cater to all needs, all different types of people, and give individuals a voice, it supports a complex society.
“YouTube is basically like the whole entire world coming together and learning from each other,” senior Amy LaFleur said. “The power of YouTube is simply mind blowing.”
With the power of YouTube rising, other broadcasting businesses are potentially becoming more obsolete. According to YouTube, over six billion hours of videos are watched each month. That means that there is almost an hour of videos for every person on Earth.
There are also 100 hours of videos uploaded every minute according to YouTube. This allows viewers to watch new videos everyday instead of waiting a week like television series.
The consistency of YouTube is what keeps it so current. Something new is always being shared and YouTube is there to capture those moments.
