Aitana Ross ’25: “Winter Poem” by Nikki Giovanni
“I chose this poem because I liked how the author uses imagery to personify nature,” Aitana said. “I also liked how her poem portrays the change from winter to spring in the perspective of a flower coming back to life. I found it interesting how the poem could be a representation of transformation from one big change to another. I liked how the flower could represent us changing from one ‘season’ in our lives to another and still being able to grow through it. The flower still was optimistic when it snowed and I like to think that Giovanni is trying to tell us to stay positive during hard times.”
“Winter Poem”
once a snowflake fell
on my brow and i loved
it so much and i kissed
it and it was happy and called its cousins
and brothers and a web
of snow engulfed me then
i reached to love them all
and i squeezed them and they became
a spring rain and i stood perfectly
still and was a flower.
