The Sacred Heart Greenwich community supports women and survivors of breast cancer during the month of October. Some people wear the pink ribbon as an act of encouragement, some donate to organizations to support breast cancer research and awareness, and others contribute silently, praying for those whom this disease has impacted. Juniors Morgan Mathews and Beata Servick founded the Breast Cancer Club at Sacred Heart this year to spread knowledge about the cause and provide a platform to inform the community about breast cancer and women’s health, which they believe is particularly significant at an all-girls school.
In discussing the start of this club, Morgan and Beata explained that they became intrigued with the Breast Cancer Alliance last year, joined, and began researching ways to spread awareness at Sacred Heart. The mission of the Breast Cancer Alliance is to better the quality of life for those with breast cancer through early detection, treatment, and prevention, according to breastcanceralliance.org.
“I heard about the association and immediately wanted to join it,” Morgan said. “The association does amazing things for those struggling with breast cancer.”
Beata was excited to be a part of this cause because her grandmother suffered from breast cancer. Beata described her personal connection to the cause.
“Breast cancer awareness month is really about celebrating all the people who have gone through breast cancer, whether that be survivors, people who have fallen due to the disease, or my grandmother, whom I love dearly,” Beata said. “These personal connections really support my drive to help people who are suffering through financial and moral ways.”
The Breast Cancer Alliance Association offers multiple ways to donate, educate, and participate outside of school, including 5-kilometer runs, auctions to raise money, and volunteering opportunities. Within the school community, Morgan and Beata want club members to feel that they are actively working to help this global issue. To do so, they plan to host presentations involving guest speakers, manage bake sales, and initiate pink-outs at athletic events with the goal of raising awareness while simultaneously having fun. The club executed its first bake sale October 27. Morgan shared what she hopes people will gain from joining this club.
“I hope that the people in this club understand how many people suffer from breast cancer and what we can do to help those struggling,” Morgan said. “I always felt compelled to educate myself on the subject and do everything in my power to help others struggling with cancer.”
This October, Morgan and Beata encourage the Sacred Heart community to help raise awareness for this disease. They suggest that people support their mission through donations, wearing the pink ribbon, or prayerful silence. Beata expressed her main goal for this club.
“I hope to educate and raise awareness on the realities of breast cancer,” Beata said. “Whether that be debunking rumors about the disease or having bake sales.”
