What inspired you to join Model UN (United Nations) during your freshman year?
“When I initially joined Model UN, I was attracted to its combination of speech and debate skills with global affairs. I have always had an interest in public policy and our nation’s government practices, and I felt that Model UN is the perfect blend of these two fields. I also was interested in growing my public speaking skills and learning more about other countries. Originally, I was slightly unsure as to whether I was fit for the role, but I learned that it is something that grows within you over time. Looking back on my decision, I am extremely glad that I made the decision to join the club. It has a fun yet hard-working spirit, and through this club, I have been able to form and grow friendships with so many people. It truly is one of my favorite experiences offered at Sacred Heart, so if you are considering joining Model UN, I highly encourage you to give it a try.”
What skills do you practice in Model UN?
“Model UN truly does encompass a variety of skills. In preparing for a conference, research and analysis skills are used to learn one’s country’s history and position on a topic and create a comprehensive solution. During a conference, clear and concise public speaking is critical to successfully getting your point across. Furthermore, one’s willingness to compromise and work together is key to one’s success and longevity within the conference. In the end, one’s participation in the conference and preparation before is evaluated throughout the course of the conference and is later taken into consideration for the distribution of awards.”
What did you take away from this weekend’s conference?
“In this weekend’s conference, I got the opportunity to maximize my skill set. By utilizing skills new and old, I was able to give speeches with confidence and ease, collaborate with other students to create diverse solutions, and truly feel a sense of accomplishment through Model UN that I had not experienced before. Additionally, exploring Philadelphia and experiencing ILMUNC (Ivy League Model United Nations Conference) for the first time was a privilege. I am thankful for my fellow club members in addition to Ms. Malih and Mrs. Candanosa for making this weekend a fun yet educational experience.”
