For this edition of Guide to Greenwich, I visited three bakeries in Fairfield County and Westchester County in search of the best red velvet cupcakes. I judged these flavorful red sweets based on their taste, price, and proximity to Sacred Heart Greenwich.
Beascakes Bakery
My first stop was Beascakes Bakery in the scenic town of Armonk, New York. As I drove down Main Street, the bakery caught my attention with its decorative sign and the picturesque plaza in which it resides. Upon entering, the staff kindly greeted me as I observed their wide selection of cakes, cupcakes, and baked goods, such as cookies and brownies. In addition to their delectable pastries, the bakery provides coffee and seating to allow visitors enjoy their delicious sweet treats.
Beascakes Bakery presents its variety of cupcakes in a neat array, from which I purchased their red velvet cupcake. The top of the cupcake displayed chocolate flake decorations, and the cake was filled with cream cheese frosting, which made the sweetness slightly overbearing. The bakery is a mere 12 minutes from campus, and the cupcake cost $3. Overall, this red velvet treat provided the perfect bite for a reasonable price.
Forever Sweet Bakery
Next, I visited Forever Sweet Bakery in Norwalk, Connecticut, to taste their take on red velvet cupcakes. As I arrived at the tiny and vibrant bakery, the sweet scent of freshly-baked goods greeted me upon opening the door. In addition to the impressive displays of cakes designed for special occasions, the bakery offers uniquely-flavored cupcakes along with the classic flavors.
Forever Sweet Bakery offers two options for a red velvet cupcake: one with buttercream frosting and the other with cream cheese frosting. Ultimately, I chose the cream cheese frosting option, which the bakers had decorated with heart-shaped sprinkles. The cupcake provided a delicious flavor with its sweet frosting and airy cake. While this cupcake also cost $3, the bakery is 30 minutes away from Sacred Heart’s campus, making it a long ride.
Nothing Bundt Cakes
Lastly, I made a trip up to Stamford, Connecticut to visit Nothing Bundt Cakes. This bakery is unique due to its special bundt cakes and cupcakes. Not only does the shop offer celebratory cakes, but it also sells individual-sized mini bites, or “Bundtinis,” for visitors to enjoy. When I entered, I headed straight for the Bundtini section, as the cakes were all decorated with a simplistic and classic design.
As these special cupcakes are only available in assortments of 12, I purchased a dozen red velvet Bundtinis for $27. My first impression based on the first bite was that the amount of frosting in comparison to the amount of cake was excessive and did not create a satisfying bite. Overall, this bakery is slightly far from campus as it is a 20 minute drive, and it is inconvenient to buy a pack of twelve if one is only looking to purchase an individual treat.
Winner
After tasting red velvet cupcakes from three different bakeries in Fairfield County and Westchester County, I determined that Beascakes Bakery sold the best one. Its close proximity to campus along with the scenic drive through Armonk makes their cupcakes an easy treat to pick up after school. With a well-balanced bite of frosting and cake, this red velvet cupcake is the perfect pastry to enjoy.
