As the Class of 2024 prepares to venture beyond the gates of King Street, seniors Madeleine (Maddie) Hooper, Skylar Stewart, and Guinevere Whitely each seek to continue their academic careers in the pursuit of a higher education in medicine. These three seniors explained how their Sacred Heart Greenwich educations have prepared them for this undertaking. They shared their inspiration for delving into the medical field and their hopes to serve others.
In the fall, Maddie will attend Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. She plans to play basketball in addition to majoring in neuroscience. She aspires to study neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimers in a lab when she is older. Maddie described how her family’s experience inspires her to search for ways to help those who suffer from these ailments.
“Alzheimer’s runs in my family, and my grandma was diagnosed with it a few years ago,” Maddie said. “Being a firsthand witness to the effects of Alzheimer’s sparked my interest in wanting to research it and hopefully find a cure or a more manageable way to live with it.”
At Sacred Heart, Maddie is taking neuroscience and Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry. She shared that these classes and the support from her teachers have helped prepare her for the next level of academics in a medical setting.
“This year, I am taking a neuroscience class at Sacred Heart,” Maddie said. “The class used to be online, and this year was the first year we had it in person. I’m incredibly grateful for all the knowledge the class has given me. Additionally, my teacher, Ms. [Joyce] Reed, has been an incredible mentor and has helped me find more neuroscience research opportunities over the summer. I also took AP Chemistry this year with Dr. [Saffron] Castle, and it has taught me so much valuable information that I will use if I get to be a researcher.”
Skylar will enter Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, as a biology major and hopes to eventually attend medical school and become a general surgeon. Her interest in the medical field stems from an experience she had as a child exploring a hospital while a family member was ill. Skylar explained how the doctors’ caring nature and curing capabilities touched her.
“Ever since I was eleven, I have been obsessed with medicine,” Skylar said. “The ability to heal has always fascinated me. But a change inside me had occurred, and I wanted to be a part of healing. I believe that Trinity will help me explore medicine through a deeper lens, allowing me to successfully utilize this passion and make a meaningful impact in the field of medicine.”
Since Skylar’s passion for medicine first began, she has had opportunities to gain knowledge in the field, such as joining Operation Med School, where she served as the executive marketing coordinator. She also has participated in bioethics and moral medicine programs at Brown University. Furthermore, she has had valuable learning experiences about the human body through courses at Sacred Heart, including science research, anatomy, biology, and chemistry.
This fall, Guinevere will attend the University of California, San Diego, as a neurobiology major and bioethics minor. She hopes to gain hands-on experience in preparation for attending medical school and eventually launching her career as a pediatric neurosurgeon. She expressed that her interest in neuroscience is rooted in her family’s involvement in medicine and the exposure she has had to it since a young age. Guinevere explained how Sacred Heart has given her a strong foundation for a career in this field.
“During senior year, I have been able to take classes, specifically anatomy and physiology, neuroscience, and AP Biology, which have all done an amazing job of giving me a base knowledge of many things that I will be learning in the next eight years of college and medical school,” Guinevere said. “Along with that, the community at Sacred Heart has helped with my people skills and made me more comfortable and confident in my abilities to pursue my true passion.”
