The war between Russia and Ukraine persisted while the Israeli and Palestinian conflict expanded, including other nations like Iran, Lebanon, and Syria. Protests on college campuses across the United States (US) rose up as a result of this conflict, most notably at Columbia University. In April, a solar eclipse was visible in parts of North America. Former President Donald John Trump became the first-ever president to be convicted of a crime with 34 felony counts in May before winning the presidency in November for a historic second, non-consecutive term. President Joe Robinette Biden dropped out of the 2024 Presidential Race in July. Consequently, Vice President Kamala Harris became the first Black woman and Asian American and the second woman in US history to win a major party nomination. Paris held the 2024 Summer Olympics, with the US winning the overall medal count. Ms. Claudia Sheinbaum became the first female president of Mexico. In the final days of 2024, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and former President James (Jimmy) Carter died at age 100. In 2024, the King Street Chronicle welcomed 14 staff writers to the newsroom. After two years on the newspaper’s staff, Emily has learned lessons of responsibility, leadership, and critical thinking. This year, she hopes to foster a collaborative environment in the newsroom and weave her interests in creative writing, reading, and current events into her articles. Additionally, she aspires to ignite a passion for language and words in all her editors and staff writers. When not writing or editing for the King Street Chronicle, Emily works as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Perspectives, leads as President of the Neighbor-to-Neighbor club, sails for the Sacred Heart Greenwich sailing team, and writes creatively.
