For this edition of Guide to Greenwich, I visited Garden Catering, Roost, and Rinaldi’s Country Deli to determine which sold the best bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich. I judged these delicious early morning repasts based on taste, price, and proximity to Sacred Heart Greenwich.
Garden Catering
My first stop was Garden Catering. There are numerous Garden Catering locations in Fairfield and Westchester Counties. I chose to visit the one in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, because I was in that part of town. They also have stores in Bridgeport, Fairfield, Stamford, and Greenwich, Connecticut, as well as Port Chester and Mamaroneck, New York. The closest location to Sacred Heart is the one in Greenwich on Hamilton Avenue, which is just a 14-minute drive from campus. When I arrived, the staff greeted me kindly and promptly took my order. The sandwich cost $5.49, which seemed like a reasonable price. It took them roughly five minutes to make my sandwich. After receiving my order, I left Garden Catering since there are no tables nor seating inside the deli.
The egg in the sandwich had the perfect consistency as it was over medium. However, when I bit into the sandwich, I would often get bites that did not have any bacon nor cheese, or had an overwhelming amount of one of the two. In addition, the sandwich had an uneven proportion of bread. Despite these shortcomings, the sandwich was still flavorful and was a great source of protein, fats, and carbohydrates after my workout that morning.
Roost
Next, I visited Roost, which is an eatery and coffee shop in Cos Cob, Connecticut, about a 19-minute drive from Sacred Heart. They also have a second location in Darien, Connecticut. When I walked in, there were many breakfast selections on the menu, including two different bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches. I chose their classic bacon, egg, and cheese, not their Roost bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, which comes with arugula, tomato, and chipotle mayonnaise. I decided to add avocado to my sandwich and chose ciabatta bread as my base. In the end, my sandwich cost $9.00. Without the avocado, it would have come to a total of $7.00. While I waited for my order, I noticed the clean and cozy ambiance of the eatery, which was reminiscent of a café in the English countryside.
Once I got my sandwich, the first thing that I noticed was its aesthetically pleasing exterior. Overall, the sandwich was flavorful, and I loved the choice of cheddar cheese. All of the ingredients tasted fresh, too. However, the bread was slightly overpowering. In the end, while this sandwich was on the pricier side, it offered a fresh version of the classic breakfast sandwich.
Rinaldi’s Country Deli
Finally, I drove over to Rinaldi’s Country Deli, also in Cos Cob, Connecticut. While Rinaldi’s is a 20-minute drive from King Street, their delicious sandwiches makes it worth the trip. When I arrived, I had trouble finding parking, as most of the spots are on the street. Once I got inside, the service was very quick. The bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich I ordered cost $4.75, which was the cheapest of the three locations. Since there is no seating inside and only a few tables and benches outside, I took it to go because it was a rather cold day.
When I bit into the sandwich, I noticed a good ratio of bacon, egg, cheese, and bread. In addition, the egg had the perfect consistency of over-medium, so it was not too runny nor too rubbery. While there were a few bits of bacon that I found a tad too crisp, overall the sandwich was delicious and the perfect way to start off my morning.
Winner
After visiting the three locations, I concluded that Rinaldi’s Country Deli sold the best bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. While the Garden Catering sandwich is a classic and Roost’s sandwich offered a fresh version of the classic bacon, egg, and cheese, Rinaldi’s sandwich was both the cheapest and the tastiest. Although it is 20 minutes away from Sacred Heart and the parking is rather difficult, it is well worth the trip.
