The average woman uses 12 beauty products every day, likely without checking the labels or researching the ingredients inside products. However, doctors have highlighted several common ingredients in popular beauty products that may cause harm to consumers. In fact, there is a growing awareness on how these popular beauty products can impact an individual’s health, according to nypost.com.
People should avoid products containing sulfates because they can contribute to endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity, and skin irritation. Researchers have found beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) in lipsticks, moisturizers, and eyeliners. Studies have also linked BHA to various forms of cancer as well as kidney damage. Some manufacturers use polyethylene glycols (PEGS) in hand soaps, foundations, and creams which have shown links to cancer, according to nypost.com

Many manufacturers use the naturally occurring mineral talc in deodorant, eye shadow, foundation, and baby powder. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tests have found asbestos in talc, while lawsuits have claimed talc is carcinogenic, according to The New York Times. Ingredients that end in the word, “paraben,” contain components which may increase the risk of cancer. Mrs. Kristin Lisjak, Upper School Science Teacher and Science Department Chair, discussed the use of these parabens in products.
“Cosmetic companies currently do not need FDA approval before selling their products to consumers,” Mrs. Lisjak said. “Research on the effect of parabens on human health is ongoing.”
In addition, many deodorants, perfumes, shampoos, and lip glosses have fragrances in them. However, companies do not need approval for this either. Mrs. Lisjak explained how this lack of transparency makes it difficult for the consumer to evaluate whether the fragrance contains compounds to which they may be sensitive or allergic .
“Companies are not required to list which specific fragrances are used in their products.” Mrs. Lisjak said. “Any fragrance or flavor can be listed as only ‘fragrance’ on the ingredient list.”
Recently, experts have scrutinized phthalates for its potentially dangerous effects. Manufacturers also use phthalates in nail polish, cosmetics, deodorant, and body wash. Research shows links between phthalates and heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Studies have also connected phthalates to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, according to nypost.com.

Consumers can search ingredients in their products through online databases like Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, according to safecosmetics.org. This website informs consumers about risks in using specific products and offers safety ratings for popular products and brands. Mrs. Lisjak commented on the importance of awareness surrounding cosmetic products.
“Anyone concerned with potential side effects or health risks related to using cosmetic products should consult with their doctor,” Mrs. Lisjak said.
