Members of Sacred Heart Greenwich community demonstrated a call to action, March 7, at the all-school blood drive. The Pre-Med Club leaders hosted the drive, offering Upper School students and faculty the opportunity to make a tangible impact on those in need. Through their work, the Pre-Med club supports female encouragement and strengthens the school community, reinforcing Goal III of the Sacred Heart Goals and Criteria, “a social awareness which impels to action.”
The Pre-Med Club, dedicated to providing students with hands-on experience in the medical field, organizes events that educate and inspire future healthcare professionals. The club heads, juniors Arianna Chin, Haley Blackwell, and Dua Khan, work to encourage students to discover various fields of medicine and foster female empowerment. Beyond expanding medical knowledge, the club emphasizes service and community engagement. Through events, like speaker panels, medical workshops, and an all-school blood drive, club members gain a deeper understanding of the healthcare field while giving back in meaningful ways. Haley discussed what prompted her to start this club at Sacred Heart and what she hopes to accomplish as a leader.
“I was influenced to start this club at Sacred Heart because of my love for and interest in medicine,” Haley said. “I also wanted to start this club because I hoped to learn more about the medical field and talk to other students with similar interests and help them learn more and pursue their goals.”

Blood donations are crucial in medical emergencies, surgeries, and for patients battling chronic illnesses. Several conditions require blood transfusions for recovery, such as anemia, cancer, sickle cell disease, and blood loss from surgery, according to clevelandclinic.org. Blood transfusions provide essential components that are necessary for the body to heal. A single donation can save up to three lives, making each contribution incredibly valuable, according to redcross.org. More than just a medical necessity, blood drives unite donors in a common cause, reinforcing the importance of compassion and generosity. Dua commented on why the club heads wanted to host a blood drive, and the impact they hoped it would have on the community.
“I am hoping to get the community excited about this partnership with the Red Cross and donate blood to those in need,” Dua said. “I hope this will inspire students to take action in the medical field to both serve others and further their involvement in the medical field.”

As the Pre-Med Club prepares for the blood drive, the club heads encourage eligible students and faculty to participate, either by donating or spreading awareness. With blood donations collected, the Sacred Heart community exhibits Goal III by taking action for a cause. Haley emphasized how the Pre-Med Club embodies the Goals and Criteria. She described how she aims to bring attention to health issues and make a difference through fundraising, educational presentations, and community service.
“I believe that the Pre-Med Club aligns well with the goals and criteria of Sacred Heart, specifically Goals III and V,” Haley said. “Goal III states: Schools of the Sacred Heart commit themselves to educate to a social awareness which impels to action. I think that the Pre-Med Club follows this goal because the pre med club advocates for and educates about health, and we strive to learn more about the medical hardships people can suffer from. Goal V states: Schools of the Sacred Heart commit themselves to educate to personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom. I think that the Pre-Med Club follows this goal because it is full of girls who have chosen to devote their time to growing as students and discovering more about medicine and the medical field, which ties into Goal II as well.”
