Twelve seasons. Three sports. One player. Convent of the Sacred Heart senior Colleen O’Neill will earn her twelfth varsity letter this spring after playing varsity soccer, basketball, and lacrosse since her freshman year of high school.
This year, Colleen was captain of Sacred Heart’s varsity soccer and varsity basketball teams. She was also co-captain of the varsity lacrosse team alongside senior Maureen Leitner.
“You always know that at the big moment in the big game, Colleen will be the one to get the job done,” lacrosse teammate and Colleen’s sister Claire O’Neill said. “She is a star and I have learned so much from her simply by example.”
Not only her teammates appreciate her hard work and leadership. News 12 Connecticut recently released a profile on Colleen’s commendable academic and athletic pursuits. She is also featured in articles on ctpost.com and greenwich-post.com.
“My involvement in athletics has almost totally shaped the person I am today,” Colleen said. “I have learned how to be a leader. I have grown in confidence as my teammates and coaches inspired and believed in me. I have learned how to embrace failure with grace. I have learned that hard work, dedication, persistence, and the will to achieve will always pay off.”
Colleen’s diligence persists off the field in her academic work. She demonstrates a love of political science, particularly enjoying her AP Comparative Government course this past year. Her leadership skills are further exemplified by her positions as a Peer Leader and a Eucharistic Minister in the school community.
Next year, Colleen plans to continue her athletic career by playing on club, intramural, and interhall sports at University of Notre Dame.
“Hopefully, I will help my dorm make it to the girl’s flag football interhall championships in Notre Dame Stadium,” Colleen said.
