Apple’s products are almost exclusively manufactured in China, according to Bloomberg Businessweek. However, Apple has recently decided to invest 100 million dollars to begin producing Apple products in the United States.
Tom Cook, the CEO of Apple, made the decision to invest in America’s manufacturing as part of the company’s duty to serve the American people.
“I don’t think we have a responsibility to create a certain kind of job, but I think we do have a responsibility to create jobs,” Mr. Cook said in Bloomberg Businessweek.
Apple is often criticized for its emphasis on Chinese manufacturing with minimal American contribution.  Apple tried to combat these criticisms with this investment with the hope of becoming a more “Americanized” company , according to the Harvard Business Review.
Although the investment will create a mere 200 jobs according to the Harvard Business Review, the expenditure is predicted to have revolutionary implications on the United  States economy. According to Bloomberg Businessweek analysts, this shift could potentially foster a rebirth in electronic manufacturing in the United States.
Convent of the Sacred Heart sophomore Kirsten Parkinson anticipates the potential impacts of Apple American manufacturing to be positive ones.
“It is exciting because I have a lot of Apple products,” Kirsten said. “I think it would definitely provide incentive to invest in American manufacturing.”
In contrast, some believe the investment will have no major impacts.
“This does not herald a booming return of high-volume manufacturing to the United States,” the former CEO of Flextronics International Ltd., Michael Marks, told Bloomberg Businessweek.
Mr. Karl Haeseler, Sacred Heart Director of Educational Technology, recognizes Apple is not the only company emphasizing American manufacturing.
“Daimler-Benz (Mercedes-Benz) is doing the same thing as Apple and committing to manufacturing cars in the United States,” Mr. Haeseler said. “However, their two manufacturing initiatives contrast because Daimler’s manufacturing is more proactive than Apple’s.”
