Convent of the Sacred Heart’s 2015-2016 student athletes attended invitationals, tournaments, and competitions throughout February and March, in hopes of earning titles and breaking records for the winter season.
February 22 head basketball coach Ms. Jessica Spicer and assistant coach Mr. Tevin Baskin led the varsity basketball team to the quarterfinals of the Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) Tournament. The Hamden Hall Country Day School Hornets played the Sacred Heart Tigers on the Hornets’ home court.
Senior and captain Grace Passannante scored eight points with nine rebounds for Sacred Heart. Additionally, junior Kristen Davis scored seven points and had seven rebounds and three steals, according to greenwichtimes.com.
Ultimately, the Hornets won 53 to 32 and the Sacred Heart varsity basketball team ended its season with a total of seven wins and 14 losses, leaving them ninth in the FAA overall standings.
On the squash court, the varsity squash team, accompanied by head coach Ms. Celia Allamargot and assistant coach Mr. Peter Kearney, traveled to an overnight trip at Exeter Academy February 27 and 28. The Tigers competed in the New England Interscholastic Squash Association (NEISA) tournament in the girl’s Division A.
Junior Haley Davis won two out of her three matches on the first day of competition. The next day, she lost both of her matches. At the end of the tournament, she ranked eighth out of 16 girls in her division.

This season, captain and senior Catherine Keating led the team to 15 wins and eight losses, winning 65.2 percent of their games.
“The end of the season games are always bittersweet for me. Sacred Heart’s sports’ program really encourages the team to bond and create friendships among all grade levels, especially during our overnight trips,” Haley said. “While practice can be exhausting at times, I feel proud representing our school on the court.”
Sacred Heart’s junior varsity and varsity diving team traveled to Suffield Academy in Suffield, Connecticut to participate in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Diving Championships March 2.
Senior Caleigh Kupersmith placed fourth, earning 381.20 points. Eighth grader Piper Van Wagenen placed eleventh against 33 other divers in the NEPSAC diving event.

The junior varsity and varsity swim team also qualified to compete in the NESPAC Swimming Championships at Deerfield Academy Saturday, March 5 through Sunday, March 6. Co-captain Erin Schick received thirteenth place in the 100-yard butterfly race and junior Alexandra Grusky placed twelfth in the 200-yard freestyle.
The Sacred Heart Tigers beat two school records at this meet. Freshman Allison Opuszynski broke a 25-year-old record swimming the 50-yard freestyle race in 25.09 seconds, beating the previous record by 0.21 seconds. The 400-yard freestyle relay team finished tenth place and beat another record in 3:44.70 seconds.
With the help of coach Mr. Brendan Heller, the varsity swim team won seven of its ten meets during the winter season and received third place in the FAA championships February 27. The team also finished in ninth place at the NEPSAC championships with a total of 97 points.
“This last meet’s success perfectly demonstrated the hard work we, as a team, put in this season. We were all so proud of one another after seventeen of us swam personal bests,” junior Genevieve Capolongo said.
