Earning the title “Iron Lady,” Thatcher led the end of the Cold War movement with United States president, Ronald Ragan. Thatcher also helped boost the British economy by cutting inflation and introducing a radical budget to cut taxes and spending cuts, according to BBC News.
Convent of the Sacred Heart Upper School physics teacher, Dr. Saffron Castle, who lived in England during Thatcher’s term as prime minister, spoke of Thatcher’s involvement in politics. “Margaret Thatcher inspired a generation to become involved in politics, as they saw political decisions actually causing significant changes to everyday life,” Dr. Castle said.
“It is our duty to look after ourselves and then also to help look after our neighbor and life is a reciprocal business and people have got the entitlements too much in mind without the obligations,” Thatcher said about her entitlement philosophy to a magazine in 1987.
In 2001, her political activities began to decline as she suffered from a series of minor strokes.
“She was also suffering from dementia which was affecting her short-term memory,” Thatcher’s daughter Carol said to BBC News.
