"Humans of Sacred Heart" – Lily Santangelo ’21
How long have you been fencing, and what prompted you to start the sport?
“I started fencing when I was 12. I started because my friend invited me to her fencing birthday party. I remember before I went I was not super excited about it, but when I got back in the car when the party was over, I told my mom I loved it and that I wanted to start fencing. I started with a camp that summer, and then the next school year I started playing and practicing on a more regular basis.”
What is your favorite aspect of the sport?
“I think my favorite part is spending time with my friends at practice. I love that fencing requires thinking about what your opponent is going to do next and how to counter that. I also really like my coaches. They are really nice and work very hard to make our practices fun. It is also a great workout.”
Are you excited to have fencing as an official sport this year at Sacred Heart Greenwich?
“I am super excited to have fencing at Sacred Heart this year. I think it will be a great way to meet people in different grades. I also think it will be really nice to go to tournaments with a team.”
