The last day of school is supposed to be monumental for seniors. It is the final seven hours we will ever spend as high school students at a place we like to call our second home. However, the past few years I have noticed that we fail to go out with a bang and end up leaving with more of a pathetic tinkering.
I think we can all agree that the most significant portion of the last day of school is field day. We have about three hours to race, bounce, dive, and fight our way to a win. While I am always one to end up in a full sweat after about 15 minutes of intense capture-the-flag, I cannot help but notice the unsmiling bystanders who sit by the water-cooler and complain about how tired they are. Really? I mean come on. If ever there was a time to show your school spirit and earn points for your team, it is on field day. And if you are not a fan of capture-the-flag, why not try out the blow-up obstacle course? I promise you the plastic- burn and the whiplash is all welcomed by the time you barrel down the last slide of the course and are greeted with victory. “Go big or go home,” is the mantra we should all be thinking and putting to use down at the turf fields.
However, field day is not the only thing for which we need to step up our game. The school day goes from 8:15 am to 3:25 pm. The last day of school is no exception. For all you stragglers who hide out in the pit or the core center to escape at the earliest possible time, this goes out to you. Will it really kill you to spend that extra hour with all your classmates before summer begins? The answer is no. We should milk every last second we get to spend together at Sacred Heart, not throw it away to miss the traffic and get home faster.
The last day of school can be filled with those magical little moments that perfectly tie together our high school experience. Enjoy that last chocolate chip muffin and do not groan when there are Chipwiches once again, because it might be your last one. Flaunt your team’s color, and try out the slip n’ slide, even if your T-shirt is somewhat see-through and your face paint gets everywhere. Take a few Facebook worthy pictures and get emotional with your friends over the predictable and sappy “goodbye” song that is played at chapel, just because you can. Take time to celebrate the small things that can only be truly appreciated at Sacred Heart.
The last day of school is a culmination of our journey here together. No one should have to force us to stay in school, or yell at us when we fall asleep in the Senior send-off chapel, because we should want to participate and get involved. To all those younger than the seniors, take this advice now because soon enough it will be your final last day too. And to all you seniors, let’s go out with a bang.
