Giving back for Christmas

The Carver Center and Saturdays at Sacred Heart (SASH) bring hope to children during the holiday season.
For over 20 years, Convent of the Sacred Heart Upper School advisories have prepared gift bags for three and four-year-old children from the Carver Center. Each of these baskets include a book, an age appropriate toy, and clothing for the cold weather, such as hats, socks, mittens, sweaters or pajamas.
The Carver Center works in conjunction with SASH, a recurring program of recreational and educational activities for fourth through sixth grade students. This year, Sacred Heart students have collected games and toys for the SASH kids to hand out as Christmas presents.
Sophomore Yannah Johns-Woodby, along with a group of other students, will assist Santa when he gives the bags to the Carver Center kids December 18 in the Sacred Heart theater.
“It makes you feel good that kids actually appreciate it,” Yannah said.
The Carver Center and SASH help Sacred Heart students fulfill Goal 3, “a social awareness which impels to action.”
Mrs. Lori Wilson, Director of Campus Ministry, Upper School Community Service and Summer Enrichment, believes that giving to the Carver Center and volunteering at SASH provides an equally fulfilling experience for both the Sacred Heart students who give the presents and for the children who receive them.
“The children have some things that they need, some things that are just for fun and through it all know that other people love and care about them,” Mrs. Wilson said.
