While waiting for the tennis courts, fields, and Mianus River to defrost, Convent of the Sacred Heart spring sports captains prepare for the upcoming season. Each captain has specific goals in mind and is working hard to get her team ready for success this spring.
This season’s crew captains, seniors Regina Ferarra and Shannon Longworth, want to see their teammates accomplish personal goals. Shannon hopes to motivate the girls to work hard and see the positive effects of their dedication and hard work.
“I think the hardest part of this season will be putting in the hours of work to make the improvement necessary to do well,” Shannon said. “It’s definitely easier to say you want to win than to show your actions at practice, but I know that we can do it.”
Tennis captains Maddie Church and Cori Gabaldon are both juniors who also hope that hard work will lead their team to the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) tournament. Last year, the Sacred Heart varsity tennis team won the New England Class B tennis championship after defeating Kingswood Oxford 5-2 in the final round. The captains also plan to encourage more bonding through activities beyond practice.
“I think that team bonding is an important part of any sport and it definitely helps bring our team closer together,” Cori said.
Like the tennis captains, softball captains Nicolette Brusco and Christina Monaco plan to encourage more team bonding this season. The two seniors have been on the team since their freshmen year and they would like to win more games than they have in previous years. Most importantly, they would like every team member to have fun.
“Nicolette and I are excited to have team dinners and team bonding times,” Christina said. “Being at practice together is just one of the things that brings a team together.”
Christina also hopes that the team can successfully acclimate to the new coach, Sacred Heart Middle School math teacher Kristen D’Alessandro.
The golf captains, seniors Christie Huchro and Mimi Dunn, aspire to lead their team to victory this spring. Christie thinks that the most difficult challenge will be preparing for match play competitions.
“There is so much strategy involved in these types of matches, and we need to prepare sufficiently in order to be successful,” Christie said.

Success is also on the minds of the senior lacrosse co-captains Mo Leitner and Colleen O’Neill, who intend to build a strong team this season. They want to spend time together as a team on and off the field in order to create an environment that encourages everyone to do their best and work hard to improve.
“No matter who the competition is, we want to focus on what we have to do to be the best we can every time,” Mo said.
The inaugural track team has not yet elected captains , but will be coached by assistant varsity soccer and junior varsity basketball coach, Mr. Andrew Heath.
