This year, 17 Sacred Heart Greenwich senior student athletes took a decisive step toward their academic and athletic futures by announcing their commitments to colleges across the nation. Representing various sports such as lacrosse, basketball, field hockey, squash, volleyball, swimming, and rowing, these seniors displayed their athletic prowess and affirmed their dedication to higher education.
For these athletes, committing to a college demonstrates years invested in effort, dedication, and personal sacrifice. Each of them devoted extensive time to refining their skills on the field, court, or track, all while upholding rigorous academic standards. Among these individuals stands senior Kaitlin Robinson, who participates in both varsity volleyball and varsity lacrosse. Kaitlin has pledged to continue her lacrosse journey at Duke University. Reflecting on her experiences, she shared insights and cherished memories gained from her time as part of Sacred Heart Greenwich’s athletic community.
“As my high school athletic career ends, I hope to be remembered as a great teammate and competitor,” Kaitlin said. “At the end of the day, people won’t remember the wins and losses we had, but rather the strong bond of our team and the memories we made on and off the field. I love my teammates and am glad to share many memories with them.”
While the college commitment process is an exciting time for these senior athletes, it also comes with its share of challenges. Balancing the demands of academics, athletics, and the college application process can be overwhelming, requiring careful time management and support from coaches, teachers, and family members. However, strong support from fellow team members creates a safe haven for athletes amidst these pressures. Senior Skylar Stewart committed to Trinity College for field hockey. She spoke about the unifying impact that her team had during her high school career.
“My teammates on the Sacred Heart team have been like a second family to me, and I will never forget the friendships I have made during my time on the field hockey team, especially with such a small roster,” Skylar said. “After high school, I will carry with me the Sacred Heart motto of ‘Honor, Heart, Hustle,’ as it truly embodies what it means to be a well-rounded athlete.”
For many of these athletes, commitment to a college represents more than just an opportunity to compete at the collegiate level, as it is also a chance to pursue their academic passions and aspirations on a new level. Whether these students strive for a spot on the starting lineup or for excellence in the classroom, these senior athletes are poised to make an impact both on and off the field.
As these senior athletes embark on the next phase of their lives, they stand as examples of dedication, perseverance, and determination. Their journey serves as a reminder that hard work and resilience can overcome obstacles and achieve goals. Senior Maggie Bacigalupo played on varsity lacrosse during Upper School and will continue to play lacrosse for Princeton University. She reflected on her experience and growth as member of the athletics program at Sacred Heart.
“Initially, my love for the sport and competition is what drove my commitment for the sport throughout Lower, Middle, and especially Upper School,” Maggie said. “Now, at the end of my senior year, my gratitude for all this school has given me through the athletics programs has evolved my dedication to a greater level.”
