Ms. Dylan Drury ’22 served at a Content Editor, the Video Content Editor, and the Social Media Manager during her last year on the staff of the King Street Chronicle. She reflected on the valuable lessons and skills she gained during her time at Sacred Heart Greenwich and on the KSC staff. Ms. Drury shared the skills she learned while at Sacred Heart, such as communication, organization, and teamwork and how these shaped her success in college. Offering advice to current and future KSC staff, she emphasized the importance of gaining hands-on experience while maintaining an open mind, both in the Upper School and for their futures in journalism and beyond.
What skills did you learn at Sacred Heart and the KSC that you still use today?
“There are so many skills that I learned during my ten years at Sacred Heart and while on the staff of the KSC. Collaboration, communication, and organization are definitely values that were instilled in me at Sacred Heart and are all skills that you need to carry with you throughout life, especially in college and in the workplace. Being on the staff of the KSC taught me the importance of working in groups and staying communicative and organized while doing so. Now, while in college, I am thankful every day that I was taught these skills in high school before getting to college.”
What is one piece of advice you would give to Upper School students about preparing for college?
“A piece of advice that I would give to high school students who are preparing for college is to always keep an open mind. Senior year is definitely stressful, but you have to remember that you will always end up in a place that you are meant to be in. Adjusting from high school to college can definitely be difficult, but having a positive and open mindset will help you so much.”
How have you continued your interest in journalism after graduating from Sacred Heart?
“I am actually a journalism major at Southern Methodist University (SMU). My love and interest [in] journalism definitely started my sophomore year at Sacred Heart when I joined the KSC and was also a part of the broadcast journalism program at Sacred Heart. I have always loved how interactive the journalism field is and how you are constantly working as a team. Working with so many different girls in all different grades while on the staff of the KSC and Today From the Heart was so beneficial then and now.”
What piece of advice would you give to current and future KSC staff?
“One piece of advice I would give to current and future KSC staff is to try and get as much experience as you can. When I was a senior at Sacred Heart, I was an intern for Dave Fierro and the Greenwich Sports Beat, which was so much fun and was [the] first job I had in journalism. Then, as a sophomore at SMU, I interned for DMagazine in Dallas, where I met so many interesting and intelligent people. Through all of these experiences, I have created so many connections and have met so many great people who I will feel confident to reach out to later in life.”
