As the weather shifts and new plants bloom, many individuals begin maintaining and preparing gardens. Early preparation is key to a successful spring season because it gives plants the optimal time for growth and allows them to reach their full potential. By getting a head start, gardeners can ensure that their plants thrive once the warmer weather arrives, according to usatoday.org.

Gardeners can begin prepping for the growing season by starting seeds indoors. Individuals begin growing vegetables, like tomatoes, lettuce, and peppers, indoors, ideally about six weeks before the last expected frost date. When planting seeds inside, a gardener has to plant the seeds in a tray, then they can transfer the seedlings into the ground. However, once the ground thaws and the sun returns, individuals can place leafy greens directly outdoors for optimal growth, according to usatoday.org.
At Sacred Heart Greenwich, students are getting their hands dirty in the garden to prepare for this spring season. The Upper School Garden, home to herbs, vegetables, flowers, and other plants, began in the fall of 2023 alongside the formation of the Garden Club. The club offers students opportunities to learn about planting and sustainability. For optimal success in the garden, it is important plan and protect your garden throughout the transition from winter to spring, according to frameitall.com. Junior Brianna Timlin, Co-Head of the Garden Club, explained how they maintain the garden through seasonal changes.
“There isn’t much to do during the winter months since most plants don’t survive the freezing temperatures,” Brianna said. “However, it was exciting to discover that a few of them made it through. Next winter, we might add mulch in the garden beds to help insulate the soil and protect the roots.”
Since plants rely on sunlight and water, they often struggle in the winter months when those resources have limitations. Plants need sunlight because it is essential for photosynthesis, according to mortonarb.org. Once spring arrives, cleaning up the garden by removing dead plants is essential to keeping a garden healthy. Therefore, planting seeds in the spring allows them to bloom through the summer and even into the fall, according to usatoday.org.

Additionally, watering is another key part of garden maintenance throughout all seasons. It is important not to overwater or underwater, as either extreme can damage or even kill plants. Water is essential for the plants photosynthesis process because it helps them grow by creating energy. The water is absorbed at the roots is necessary for the plants to receive their nutrients, according to extention.westvirginia.edu.
The Garden Club has found a reliable solution by using an irrigation system to manage watering. Additionally, they use hoses and water the plants on their own to ensure the plants get the correct amount of water. Dr. Cheryl Boyer, a professor and Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources Extension Program Director at Kansas State University, explained how gardeners can plan their gardening for the year and plant in trays before the spring comes, that way gardeners will have a head start when the sun begins to shine, according to usatoday.org.
“Right now, depending on where people live, they’re thinking about getting their vegetable gardens ready for planting potatoes,” Dr. Boyer said. “Perhaps planting seeds in trays for later transplant, planning their gardening activities for the year, or learning about new garden topics through reading, listening, or webinars.”
