As the Class of 2025 departure from Sacred Heart Greenwich draws closer, some seniors are beginning to think about what they would like to study in college. Seniors Sofia Latrille and Ava Clear have decided to major in philosophy. These two seniors expressed their inspiration and motivation to study philosophy. They discussed their curiosity within the major and the influence Sacred Heart had on their decision.
Starting in the fall, Sofia will continue her studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Sofia hopes to use the skills she learned at Sacred Heart in college and carry them into law school. Sofia explained the practicality of studying philosophy, as it provides foundational skills for law.

“In the future, I hope to go to law school, and philosophy is one of the best ways to prepare for that. It builds the kind of analytical thinking, clarity, and logical writing that law demands,” Sofia said. “It is less about memorizing facts and more about learning how to approach problems with precision. I’ve always been curious about how people make sense of the world, what we believe, why we believe it, and how we justify our choices.”
Sofia reflected on the structure and support Sacred Heart offered throughout her years. After much exploration and research, Sofia chose to major in philosophy. She discussed why this was an assuring decision.
“Sacred Heart encourage[d] discussion, especially around ethics, justice, and personal responsibility,” Sofia said. “It was not just about learning material. [I]t was about engaging with it and asking hard questions. That kind of atmosphere made philosophy feel like a natural next step. […] Philosophy gives space to explore those ideas in a structured, thoughtful way. Once I started reading more about it, I realized it was not just interesting. It felt essential to how I think.”

Ava will attend Fordham University and major in philosophy. She gained much inspiration from her father, who also studied philosophy at Tulane University. Additionally, Ava hopes to become a teacher, though not specifically in philosophy. She spoke about some teachers and mentors at Sacred Heart who compelled her to pursue philosophy.
“I would love to become a teacher,” Ava said. “Mrs. Bader was a major inspiration to me, not only as a teacher academically, but also as a mentor to teenagers and how they conduct themselves outside of a school environment. Sacred Heart is filled with highly, highly educated people, who are so kind and willing to share their time and insight about so many different topics. Alongside that, Senior Seminar with Dr. SR sealed the deal for me back in September.”
