Ms. Kelly Haggerty ’23 served as a Content Editor, the Features Editor, and the poll curator during her time on the staff of the King Street Chronicle. Now a junior at Fairfield University, Ms. Haggerty is majoring in communications and plays on the women’s lacrosse team. She reflected on the valuable lessons and skills she gained during her time at Sacred Heart Greenwich and on the KSC staff. Ms. Haggerty shared the abilities she learned while at Sacred Heart, such as communication, organization, and teamwork, and how these shaped her success in college. While offering advice to current and future KSC staff, she emphasized the importance of developing good habits while maintaining an open mind, both in the Upper School, their futures in journalism, and beyond.
What skills did you learn at Sacred Heart and the KSC that you still use today?
“At Sacred Heart and through my work with the KSC, I developed some of the most foundational skills I still rely on every day: strong writing, clear communication, and the ability to think critically under pressure. The KSC especially taught me how to meet deadlines, work collaboratively, and take constructive feedback. These skills translate directly into academic work, everyday life, and real-world professional environments. I also learned leadership and time management, which have become essential as I juggle school, lacrosse, and work.”
What is one piece of advice you would give to Upper School students about preparing for college?
“One piece of advice I would give to Upper School students about preparing for college is don’t wait to develop good habits. Learning how to manage your time, advocate for yourself, and balance independence with responsibility will make the transition to college so much easier. Also, exploring new interests, college is much easier to navigate when you have a sense of what excites you, but you also don’t have to have everything figured out. Be open and curious.”
How have you continued your interest in journalism after graduating from Sacred Heart?
“I’ve continued writing in many ways, through my classes, student organizations, and internships. Journalism gave me a strong foundation in research, interviewing, and storytelling, and I still use those skills in academic papers, business reports, or digital content. Even beyond formal writing, journalism has shaped how I approach things I encounter every day by staying informed and paying attention to detail.”
What piece of advice would you give to current and future KSC staff?
“A piece of advice I would give to the current and future KSC staff is enjoy the process. The KSC is an incredible opportunity to grow as a writer, leader, and person. Don’t be afraid to pitch ideas, ask questions, and try new things. Journalism is a collective effort; support each other, communicate openly, and treat every story with care. The habits you form there will serve you long after you graduate.”
The King Street Chronicle thanks Ms. Kelly Haggerty ’23, former Content Editor, Features Editor, and poll curator for her contributions.
