Why do you think the Black History Month events and presentations are important for the school community?
“I believe that Black History Month events are important for the community because they educate people about Black legacy and contributions that are frequently undervalued. The events of Black History Month help communities to learn from the past and broaden their understanding of the struggles Black Americans have faced. Events and presentations focused on Black history also promote awareness, respect, and an eagerness to appreciate how Black culture has shaped our society. By taking an initiative to learn, communities can become more united and compassionate.”
What is your favorite part of helping organize these events and why?
“My favorite part of helping to organize these events is working with my peers to create significant projects and activities to promote diaspora and heritage. It’s inspiring to know that my efforts can help to educate others and make a difference in my school community. I also find joy in learning new information about Black culture when planning. When researching historically Black traditions and important figures, I am able to build a deeper appreciation [for] and understanding [of] African American history and customs.”
How do these events celebrate Black culture and history?
“These events celebrate Black culture by highlighting important historical figures and major achievements. They also showcase Black traditions through food, music, poetry, and discussion. By focusing on both struggles and successes, the events of Black History Month show the strength and resilience of the Black community. They also allow people to learn new information in creative and engaging ways. Overall, the events honor Black cultural identity in a positive and impactful way.”
