A not so average 12 years
Academy Award nominated feature film, Boyhood, captures the lives of four characters and their individual developments over a 12-year period. Starring Academy Award nominees Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, Ellar Coltrane and Lorelei Linklater, the movie follows the life of Mason (Coltrane) from age 6 to 18.
The movie has won over 13 awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, and New York Films Critics Award for Best Picture, according to variety.com. The 2014 drama received rave reviews from Los Angeles Times, People Magazine and New York Daily News. The film is also a top contender for Best Picture at the Academy Awards February 22.
“You don’t understand, for one, how long 12 years is, but also how experiences are going to affect you and be meaningful to you because you just haven’t had many… It’s still happening, I’m still realizing what it really means to me… It’s very, very strange,” Mr. Coltrane said, according to huffingtonpost.com.
Director Mr. Richard Linklater assembled the cast in summer 2002 and filmed one section of the movie. The cast and crew did not reassemble for production until the following summer. The actors played the same roles, and aged in sync with their characters, according to theverge.com.
“Even though there was not a main plot the movie was really interesting because the actors stayed the same even when they grew up,” Convent of the Sacred Heart senior Caroline Burch said.
With Mason’s mother pursuing her education while simultaneously going through a series of abusive relationships, and his father’s inconsistent presence in his and his sister’s life, Mason grew up in multiple different homes and cities. In 166 minutes, the audience watches Mason grow from a boy into a young man.
Mr. Linklater’s movie has now joined the elite group of films that have scored a perfect critical rating on metacritic.com, a website that ranks and gives composite reviews of films and video games, according to independent.co.uk.
“It’s kind of humbling to consider, but I didn’t evolve… As far as this movie goes, I didn’t want to evolve…I wanted it to feel like one movie,” Mr. Linklater said according to thedissolve.com.
