After graduating from Sacred Heart, Mrs. Garry furthered her educational career at College of the Holy Cross, earning a Bachelors of Arts degree in Fine Art and Art History.  She also immersed herself in her studies through an art program in Florence, Italy with Fairfield University, and at the Whitney Museum in New York City.
In the “Beginnings” collection, Mrs. Garry uses a colorful combination of pop art and abstract expressionism to depict the values she learned at Sacred Heart, according to Mrs. Garry’s artist statement.  The collection’s works are currently on display in the McLaughlin Gallery for all to see until December 20.
Before becoming an independent artist, Mrs. Garry worked in merchandising, design, and production for popular clothing brands, such as Vineyard Vines and Brooks Brothers, according to katygarry.com.
After working various jobs, Mrs. Garry decided to focus her career pathway as a full-time artist.  She described the impact her Sacred Heart education had on her career choice.
“Sacred Heart gives you an amazing, well-rounded education to prepare you for what lies ahead,” Mrs. Garry said.  “Sacred Heart taught me foundations that directly became applicable to business and art.  All things that apply to my life as a working artist.”
Mrs. Garry also commented on how former Upper School Art teacher Ms. Vivian Pomex influenced her in her artistic pursuits.
“[Ms. Pomex] had confidence in me that really inspired me to take my art to the next level,” Mrs. Garry said.  “She had a fearless approach to art that I think is still with me today.”

Mrs. Garry will also be selling her artwork at a boutique at Sacred Heart’s annual Come Home for Christmas event Sunday, December 2.  Additionally, she is hosting a painting party December 18, inviting alumnae to return to campus to paint Christmas ornaments.
As a member of the alumnae board, Mrs. Garry values her role as a model to current Sacred Heart students and feels that she can share her experiences working in different industries with students looking to pursue various careers.
“My three pieces of advice [to current Sacred Heart students] would be to study hard, pursue your passions, and don’t be too hard on your parents,” Mrs. Garry said.
