The pace was fast and the legs were pumping as students, friends, families and teachers scaled the campus for the third annual Run for Uganda event Saturday, October 19.
A total of $4,260 was raised from multiple activities, over $2,000 more than last year. The money raised will help pay the tuitions for two girls at the Sacred Heart Primary School in Kyamusansala Hill, Uganda and St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School in southwest Uganda.
“This year’s Run for Uganda was the most successful one we’ve had. We raised more money and had more participants than last year. We are working hard each year to provide the two tuitions and add money to the Emergency Fund for the girls,” sophomore Lizzie Considine, Africa Task Force co-club head, said.
The runners checked in at 11 am in the student dining room. Free “Run for Uganda” t-shirts were available for each runner as they checked in. There was also an array of bake sale items available for purchase. The 5k race began at 12 pm after runners gathered together to warm up and stretch.
As Mr. Bradley Miller, Upper School cross-country coach, sounded the horn, runners sprinted from the starting line near the gazebo. They continued to sprint the 3.1 mile course, in which they travelled all around the Sacred Heart campus.  Spectators cheered the runners on at every turn.

The race was scored separately for boys and girls. Junior Johanan Knight, varsity cross country runner for the Hopkins School, came in first for boys. His father Kevin Knight followed closely in second. Mackenzie Jordan, freshman cross country runner for Sacred Heart, came in first for girls, and junior cross country runner for Sacred Heart Abbi Wilson came in second.

Those who preferred a relaxing walk through the campus began their 1k “fun run” at 12:15 pm.
“The Run for Uganda was a huge success.  We can all be proud that CSH Greenwich cares about our global Sacred Heart family and came out to support our sisters in Africa,” Mrs. Lori Wilson, Director of Campus Ministry, Upper School community service and summer enrichment, said.
