For this year’s World Language Week, Sacred Heart Greenwich students shared their work in French, Korean, Arabic, Spanish, and Portuguese.  As a student of Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish Literature, senior Kate Nemec composed a letter as if she lived in the 1500s, arguing against Spanish colonization in the Americas.

Estimado escritor de la prensa filipina, 

Me llamo Kate, y le escribo a usted en referencia a la relación entre los aztecas y los coloniales de España en las Américas.  Viajé al pueblo mexicatl y descubrí la injusticia entre los coloniales y los aztecas.  Los aztecas tienen una gran ciudad con mucha influencia de su cultura.  Hay templos y riquezas alrededor de la ciudad que expresan la riqueza de la sociedad.  Además, los indígenas tienen su propia religión con la creencias de muchos dioses y la naturaleza.  Esta religión es muy diferente a nuestra religión del catolicismo.  Sin embargo, la religión es un concepto central de la vida en mexicatl.  Vi que a otros coloniales no les gusta la cultura de los aztecas porque es muy diferente a nuestras costumbres.  Por eso, los coloniales, han empezado la destrucción de los templos aztecas y todos los símbolos religiosos en la ciudad de mexicatl.  Hay mucho humo en las calles y los aztecas están muy tristes con la pérdida de su tierra nativa.  Antes de llegar a las Américas, pensaba que los aztecas eran muy inferiores a nuestra sociedad.  Cuando vi las vida rica de los aztecas y todas sus innovaciones, me di cuenta de que no necesitamos conquistar la región mexicana.  En lugar de la conquista, podemos establecer una relación con los aztecas para el comercio y la protección de las Américas.  Es vital que la gente de España no destruya las ciudades de los aztecas como Huiznahyuácatl Motelhuihtzin, el Tlailotlácatle Tlacotzin y el Tlacatecuhtli Oquihtzin.  La gente de estas comunidades no quiere asimilar con los coloniales, pero pueden compartir ideas, comercio, y tradiciones para facilitar una relación neutral.  Tengo miedo de que los exploradores conquistarán toda la tierra de los aztecas y crearán desorden en las Américas.  ¿Tiene la misma opinión que yo?  ¿Piensa que mi punto de vista soporta justicia en las regiones aztecas?  Le agradezco de antemano.

Dear writer of the Filipino press,

My name is Kate and I am writing to you regarding the relationship between the Aztecs and the Spanish colonizadores.  I traveled to the Mexicatl pueblo and perceived the injustice between the Aztecs and the colonizadores.  The Aztecs have a great city, which has much influence from their culture.  There are temples and riches throughout the city.  Also, the Natives have their own religion and they believe in many gods.  This religion is very different from our own religion, Catholicism.  Regardless, religion is a central aspect of life in Mexicatl.  I saw that other colonizadores do not like the Aztecs’ culture because it is very different from our own traditions.  As a result, the colonizadores have begun the destruction of Aztec temples and all other religious symbols of Mexicatl.  There was a lot of smoke in the streets and the Aztecs were very sad due to the loss of their native land.  Before arriving in the Americas, I thought the Aztec society was very inferior to our own.  When I saw all the innovations of the Aztecs, I realized that we should not conquer the Mexicatl region.  Instead of conquering it, we should establish a relationship with the Aztecs for commerce and the protection of the Americas.  It is vital that the people of Spain do not destroy the cities of the Aztecs, such as Huiznahyuácatl Motelhuihtzin, Tlailotlácatle Tlacotzin, and Tlacatecuhtli Oquihtzin.  The people of these communities do not want to assimilate into our culture, but they can share ideas, commerce, and traditions with us to form a balanced relationship.  I fear that the explorers will conquer all the land of the Aztecs and create disorder in the Americas.  Do you have the same opinion as me?  Do you think my point of view supports justice in the Mexicatl region?
