Humans of Sacred Heart – Ms. Janelle O'Neill

Why did you decide to become a teacher?
“As senior year of college was coming to a close, I applied for different job positions that interested me in the northeast and went on numerous interviews but nothing worked out. I was thinking of applying for a Fulbright Scholarship and went to a service fair where I spoke with an organization about a post-graduate education service opportunity. My love for mathematics and service prompted me to apply to this program and I was accepted. I decided to give teaching a try for a couple years and then reevaluate. Needless to say, I love what I do and have been in education for over ten years.”
What has been the highlight of your time at Sacred Heart Greenwich so far?
“Sacred Heart has been an extremely welcoming community. The faculty and staff have been very helpful about answering my questions and I have had such great conversations at lunch with many different people. Additionally, the math department has been a blessing! It is always nerve-racking to start a new job, and after having worked with two great math departments I am very happy to be working with such an intelligent and dedicated group.”
If you could have any other profession, what would you be and why?
“I graduated from Fairfield University with a BS in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics. If I could “do it all again,” I would probably major in Mechanical Engineering or Bioengineering and still have my math minor. I am a very hands on person and the medical field has always interested me. On a lighter note, music is something else I enjoy and I love when a DJ has a smooth transition between songs. So it’s on my bucket list to learn how to mix some of my own music and then maybe I’ll retire as a DJ.”
The King Street Chronicle thanks Upper School Math Teacher Ms. Janelle O’Neill for her contributions to “Humans of Sacred Heart.”
