Guiding Eyes for the Blind is a nonprofit organization that trains and provides service dogs for the visually impaired.

Eyes for the Blind Club

Juniors Lucy Catalano and Katherine Devine started the Eyes for the Blind Club in order to inform the community and help organizations that train service dogs.  The club partners with Guiding Eyes for the Blind, located in Yorktown Heights, New York, to help its needs of funding, support, and all around awareness.  The club plans to raise money to go towards the training of dogs that will help to lead the blind or visually impaired.  The members discuss the impact of service dogs and their training, as well as how they can raise money in order to fund the process.

Most of the club meetings will focus on planning fundraisers and other ways to get the community involved with this cause.  After raising enough to fund the training of one dog, the club heads will send the money to Guiding Eyes for the Blind.  The organization will then initiate the training process.

“We are most excited for our fundraiser events like bake sales, civvies days, and car washes that we will have once we are allowed to safely in the midst of COVID-19,” Lucy said.  “We hope to make enough money to fund 5 service dogs by the end of the year.”

Also involved with the organization, Katherine’s family is passionate about the cause.  Katherine and Lucy encourage members of the Sacred Heart community to join their club to become knowledgeable about service dogs and to help those who are in need of them.

“Someone should join our club because it is a great opportunity to both learn more about the importance of service dogs that you otherwise would not know and make a difference in the world,” Katherine said.  “Broadly, this club will teach you skills of planning, organization, and empathy.”
