Book of the Week:  The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

In the continual celebration of mothers and maternal figures, Sue Monk Kidd’s novel follows the journey of 14-year-old Lily Owens and her African-American maid, Rosaleen, as they run away from home and move in with three beekeeping sisters, May, June, and August whom Lily sought out in order to find out about her deceased mother’s past. During her time there, she learns not only more about her mother, but also learns that motherly love can come from anywhere.

The History channel is retelling this classic story of slavery in America based on the 1976 novel by Alex Haley. This miniseries follows a resilient family as they struggle to survive through all their hardships. Kinta Kunta, a young educated man who is captured and sold into slavery, attempts to rally his fellow slaves to fight for their freedom, and fulfill his dream of  escaping back to his homeland of Gambia.

Tallinn, Estonia is located on the Southern coasts of the Gulf of Finland. This quiet town is most famous for its beautiful cathedrals and architecture. One cathedral in specific that is extremely popular in Tallinn is Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. This design was created during the nineteenth century for Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Russian prince.
